BiomedERS

Life Sciences enthusiast - Student

At a young age, I started exploring and investigating various topics. My intrinsic demand to understand reached various topics like mathematics, computer science, and biology. I chose to read biomedical sciences because I wanted to understand how diseases occur, how our body responds to them, and consequently, how we could manipulate the body to overcome diseases. Bioinformatics and systems biology are particular interests of me, along immunology, synthetic biology, and oncology on molecular and cellular level.

Work

Project Manager

2021-02-01 — 2021-12-01

As the project manager of the 2021 iGEM team of my university, I worked with eleven brilliant minds to develop a project based on synthetic biology. I managed multiple teams who worked on the science, communication, programming, financial matters, and various other topics. I engaged with these teams on the content, while also enabling them to flourish in this competition. Furthermore, I spent seven weeks in the summer in the laboratory at the Sylvius Laboratory, during which I learned about DNA editing, 3A assembly, and various other engineering steps. The iGEM experience taught me so much on not only the scientific aspect, but also on teamwork, ‘long-term’ projects, and human management.

  • Led the team to a gold medal and special awards.

Student assistant

2020-07-01 — 2020-11-30

During the COVID-19 pandemic, I wanted to learn more and explore other topics in biomedical sciences. Since lab work was not possible, I chose to dive into the world of bioinformatics. I joined the group of Dr. Leon and did various assignments regarding tooling and algorithms for analysis of next-generation sequencing data. I enjoyed learning about big data, data handling, and how that could help me as a scientist in the future.

  • Helping in setting up new analytics and bioinformatics pipelines

Medior IT Auditor

2016-07-01 — Present

As a consultant, I help medium to big organizations discover risks in their external infrastructure, web applications, and their IT landscape in general. I helped major insurance agencies and government entities to get secured, providing technical capacity and in-depth assessments of various components of their IT services, infrastructure, and applications.

  • Providing expertise and developing my professional skills

ITsec expert

2018 — 2020

In my part-time journey at this bank, I contributed in many projects, testing critical components and reporting to the responsible teams and management, including key banking components and applications, as well as the software development infrastructure. I also assessed the overall infrastrucure used by 27.000+ employees and consultants at ABN Amro and communicated my findings to various stakeholders.

  • I worked my way through this big organization as an 18-years old, contributing to major projects.

Civil society organization

Volunteer

2019 — Present

As a volunteer, I help in project proposal writing at a non-profit civil society organization in the Netherlands. 3 out of 4 proposals I helped in were accepted, with each a budget of 50.000 to 100.000 euros. I also help writing quarterly reports for these projects.

  • Proposal writing and project reporting

For the iGEM competition, we published our results and work by designing and developing a website. I wrote the project description page. In addition, I guided all team members in their writing process as the Project and Wiki manager. This way, I was involved in the development of all pages, guiding team members and brainstorming about our publication.

Highschool thesis: The mutated Smad4 gene in colorectal cancer

2019
Published by Highschool

This research effort explored the TGF-beta signaling superfamily and the Smad4 gene mutation in colon cancer. During an experiment, the introduction of the Smad4-gene to epithelial colon cells in vitro with a Smad4-gene knockoff were explored.
